Bill Gates – entrepreneur, software executive and chairman of Microsoft
Bill Gates is considered to be one of the greatest businessmen of all time. He has led himself through his software company to become one of the richest men on the planet. Bill Gates is an entrepreneur, software executive and chairman of Microsoft that is said to be a monopoly.
William was born on October 28, 1995 in Seattle, to William and Mary Gates. He grew up with an older and younger sister, and their family was rich. He attended public elementary school and the private Lakeside School. When he was 13, he fell in love with software and started to work on computers at Lakewood. As a kid, Gates was at the top of everything in school, known as the smartest kid in school. He surpassed all of his peer’s abilities in nearly all subjects, especially math and science. Also little Will was apart of the Boy Scouts of America, which he achieved Life Scout, that’s the second highest rank. On his SAT, Bill earned a 1590, which is all right. He was accepted to Harvard in 1973, where he was going to receive a pre law degree. He did not receive anything as he left Harvard to start Microsoft.
Bill’s first time experiencing a computer was in the spring of 1968, when Lakeside brought in computers made by General Electric into the school. These computers immediately fascinated Bill and his friend Paul Allen as they were always in the computer room. They were so abscessed that they would stay in the computer room all day and night, writing programs, reading computer literature and anything else about computing. Gates loved computers so much that he started skipping classes to work on the computers and soon enough he wasn’t doing his work.
Bill’s first time doing dirty work on computers was when the Computer Center Corporation opened for business in Seattle. Them and Lakewood settled a deal and the school was able to provide more computer time to the students. Bill and his friends started hacking into the computers and caused problems. They would cause the systems to crash a lot and then they broke into the security system. They also altered the files that recorded the amount of computer time they were using, but soon enough they were caught and were banned them from the system for several weeks.
Gates computer talent came when the Computer Center Corporation hired him and Paul Allen to help fix the computers. The Computer Center Corporation computers were having troubles and due to the systems weak security and the frequency that it crashed. Gates and Allen were hired to find bugs and expose weaknesses in the computer system. Because of this, the two of them were given unlimited time on the computers, and that’s when Bill got hardcore with computers. This is when he developed his talents as he would read any computer related material that the day shift had left behind and he would even pick employees for new information.
Microsoft is a software company started in 1975 and has earned an annual revenue of $51.12 billion. After Gates had left Harvard, Paul Allen and him moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they started Microsoft at the Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems. The first independent version of Microsoft Windows, version 1.0, released on November 20, 1985. It was not a very good software as it lacked degree of functionality and achieved little popularity. But on December 9, 1985, Windows 2.0 came out and was way more successful the first model. This when Excel and Word first started. This was the beginning of the success of Windows. As the years went by, Gates and Allen kept designing newer software, and newer programs, and have come out with a more than 10 different editions of Windows software.
Gates is considered to be one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution. Microsoft is considered to be an illegal monopoly, but with his smart business tactics and competitive edge he got from his childhood years, he has been able to keep his company up and at the same time. Whenever Microsoft achieved a dominant position Bill vigorously defended it, so that the government doesn’t throw out his business for being an illegal monopoly. Bill has also been able to knock out other competing companies. From Microsoft’s founding in 1975 until 2006, Gates has had primary responsibility for Microsoft’s product strategy. In 1998, there was a court case called United States v. Microsoft, which the US alleged that Microsoft abused monopoly power in its handling of operating system sales and web browser sales. Gates and Microsoft dynamically defended itself, claiming that its attempts to innovate were under attack by rival companies jealous at its success, and that government litigation was only their counter. The Department of Justice announced on September 6, 2001 that it was no longer seeking to break up Microsoft and would instead seek a lesser antitrust penalty, but the case was finally settled on November 2, 2007.
All through out most of his teenage years, Gates was a complete geek or nerd.
He was constantly on the computer, which his social life did not mean anything to him. Instead of being out at night meeting new girls, partying, enjoying himself, Bill was working his computer figuring out new software. It wondered and made his curious if he was going to ever meet a girl and get married. Sure enough, Gates took some time off from the lab and met Melinda French, a lady from Dallas, Texas. They married on January 1, 1994. They have had 3 children and they live in a $125 million home, which is a 21st century earth-sheltered home in the side of a hill overlooking Lake Washington in Medina, Washington.
William Gates was ranked the richest person in the world from 1995 to 2007, with recent estimates putting his net worth over $56 billion USD. On June 16, 2006, Gates announced that he would move to a part-time role within Microsoft (not working everyday). He is now a full time Philanthropic, but is still the chairman on Microsoft.
