Is Global Warming a Myth or is Science speaking for the EARTH
Global warming: The sustained increase in the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere. Human activity contributes to this change through the buildup of heat-trapping greenhouse gases. Over time, this increase may be sufficient to cause climatic change, including rising sea levels, altering precipitation patterns and changing water supplies and crop yields. Global warming could also affect human health, harm wildlife and damage fragile ecosystems. (www.medterms.com)
Surely you have come through the words global warming at least hundreds of times, mostly in the last 5 years. Global warming has now become a new topic which is included in various important subjects, for example, geography, economy and certainly science. Not only it has become an area for experts to analyze and work, but at least 1 of 9 humans, civilians, is involved. (Information taken from the Typical Al Gore Nonsense on Global Warming web page). Personally I would dare to change that information and say that every one of us, who eats, writes on paper, drives a car, watches television and has the ability to publish such facts on a web page and everything else is contributing to global warming.
It is also true that many tribes in the Amazon rain forest and in extremely rural areas in Africa such as the Masai do not contribute as much to creating greenhouse effects as modern humans living in huge metropolitan cities. They are still humans, therefore they eat, and they cut down trees in order to burn wood and the simple fact of being present makes them accomplices of the situation. Also, we can’t stop doing what we do everyday and leave ourselves willing to die. I’m sure we can keep living in this planet, but we have to sacrifice what we don’t really need.
While looking for good sources of information in order to creating this essay, I went through a few web pages where I was surprised of some statements I read. As I had already heard about people saying that global warming was a fantasy, I thought to myself, what is the future really producing for us? I cannot say I am not worried about the amount of people that put in question these two words, “Global Warming”. It seems to me its happening and in some way, even for these so called experts it is hard to deny. I make this early declaration because further on we will not make simple hypothesis but we will use evidence to prove what I am saying.
Science has been during many centuries the source from where human civilization has supported itself for advance. As I mentioned before, global warming is now taken in consideration as one of the most important subjects. Although it is something which is recent and does not have much historical background, the actual situation the earth is living has given us the possibility to create a unique branch for global warming in the science department. But you may be curious why global warming was not as important in science as it is now. Well, two main reasons.
Centuries ago, human race was too worried to discover other things that they never thought that maybe someday the earth would start to, in some way, “stop supporting”. It is a simple as the typical phrase that people say, “If you receive, you give”. The second and most important reason is that they were absolutely no signs of any “greenhouse gases”, as the main reason for creating these gases were the burning of fossil fuels (oil, gas and coal) which never started until 1800. That makes more than 200 years that humans have been living out of these energy providers. It was certainly not their fault; simply there was no way they could link their perception of a volcano making eruption with the heating up of the earth. Until now, fossil fuels represent 85% of our total source of energy which causes a huge amount of greenhouse gases to be released. Releasing so much carbon dioxide and methane caused the “greenhouse effects” to start working. Nature is becoming more and more problematic for human race. The intensity of earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and any other natural disaster you can think of is increasing every time (deforestation, overpopulation, over harvesting are other examples of causes). If the earth warms more and more the consequences are huge, taking our civilization to probable extinction.
Another point I had never heard of is the perception of different cultures about the situation. Orientals may see a typhoon as normal hazard which attacks their coasts at least twice a year. The intensity may vary. Occidentals are hit by the largest flooding in history (New Orleans, although it is said other factors influenced part of the disaster) and they immediately link it to this new phenomenon, “the earth is warming up”.
Clearly as we all know, different cultures have mixed ways of perceiving, reasoning and communicating and as a long term, this can be a real obstacle for the humans as a whole, letting aside the differences caused by countries or religions.
There are two sides in the science of global warming. One of them is the idea that if we don’t start consuming less and start using more energy the earth will not hold. The other is the scientists which I mentioned at the beginning. They state global warming is a pseudo-science and must not be taken as a science. As we know, pseudo-science means that there is no actual evidence to proof the theories. Well, aren’t natural disasters (over and over) a sign of what awaits us? Isn’t the melting of ice in the north polar caps a sign? What is that if not evidence?
My point is to actually make you believe that global warming is going on, now, as you read my text, and as I am writing it. Pseudo-science is a science with no proof, a different method. Science has a special factor which makes it what it is now. Proof, evidence, clue, information, manifest, evince, testimony, appearance, grounds for belief, GLOBAL WARMING means all that! There is no need for us to wait and think about it. I repeat its happening.
The other reason for why I decided to write about it is simply because I find it unbelievable that there are persons which deny their reality. How can you be a scientist if you do not accept reality?
“Science is a way of describing reality; it is therefore limited by the limits of observation, and it asserts nothing which is outside observation”- Jacob Bronovski
Other experts say global warming is occurring but that its simply a circle of life and it will pass with no important consequences for human life. That, it’s not up for a common teenager to decide.
