Pop Culture Movies
This paper is about crime films and how the films are portrayed from being a criminal and a cop. Many films have different ways of showing how cops react and how they are portrayed in the movie and how criminals are portrayed in movies. In some movies the criminal is actually the good guy and the guards of the prison or the cops are the bad guys. One movie that I have watched and will be talking about in the paper is “The Shawshank Redemption”. In this movie it will portray prison guards a certain way and criminals in another. The next movie I will talk about would be “Bulletproof”. I will explain how cops can do something so wrong but so right at the same time. These two movies are both so different from each other but in some sense they are the same.
The first movie “The ShawShank Redemption” in this movie a man named Andy Dufresne is convicted of killing his wife and her lover. He is sentenced to a jail called “The Shawshank prison” This is where the plot of the movie is. He meets a guy named Red and that guy helps him out with everything he needs. The main thing about this movie is everybody but Red in the prison are innocent. This means that Andy did not kill his wife and his wife’s lover. Well in the plot of the story it shows how badly the prisoners are treated by the guards they even go as far as to kill one of the prisoners because he new to much about a certain subject. Andy throughout the movie finds out that one of the prisoners knows who killed his wife he tries to tell the warden but he doesn’t want to listen. Andy from how many years he was at the prison he had helped many people out with there banking problems. He was a banker before he went into prison a very good one at that. This guy took a 9 inch pick axe hammer and picked away at the wall one day he had escaped and nobody was able to find him. The reason they found him missing was they did a room check and behind one of the posters was a manhole the warden was stunned.
Now in this movie the prison guards were made out to be major pricks. The prisoners were mad out to be the good guys. The way the justice systems functions in this movie is well the guards did do there job and kept the prisoners in line. Like typical movies certain prisoners would get special treatment if they helped out the guards which Andy was one of them. In my mind I think that prisons are just dysfunctional inside of them. Outside of the prison everyone just thinks that the guards are the good people and the prisoners are the bad people. So outside of the prison people would think that it is a function to society. No matter what anyone does a prison will never change how they treat the prisoners and how the prisoners treat the guards.
Some motivations to criminals could be numerous reasons. The criminal could be in a gang related crime or could be so poor that stealing things are an only option. Some people it could be jealousy or anger. In the movie “The Shawshank” they automatically thought it was Andy that shot his wife and her lover because he had caught them that night having an affair. That put him as the number one suspect and since all the evidence lead to him they convicted him of murder and not the actual person who had committed the crime. So as saying what just happened this shows how there are flaws in the criminal justice system because not all guilty people go to jail and not all innocent people get set free. It just seems no matter how good a person is if there is some sort of thought that they did mainly people just think that they have then and never give it a second thought. Many people have been framed and in the movie Andy was framed. Andy was a good person to society and never done anything wrong well until he went to prison.
The second movie is “Bulletproof” This movie has many upsets to it with one of the main characters this is a comedy movie so they try to make everything become funny but it stills show real life emotions and actions about crime and how police officers get a hold of the criminals. In this movie a cop pretends to be a best friend to a criminal to get him into jail and to bust a bigger criminal this guy works for. The plot of the movie is the two guys are best friends but the criminal (Archie) had no clue the guy was a cop (Rock). Archie ends up finding out that he was a cop when he took him to a top secret place that they were making cocaine. The cop (Rock) was wired and had backup everything went out of hand and it became a shootout well Archie ends up shooting Rock he shot him right in his head. This was an accident though because Archie had a gun pointed to him and a crane hook came behind him and smacked him in the back forcing him to shoot the gun. The rest of the movie was the officer Rock trying to get Archie back to the police station. This was hard to do because the main bad guy had police officers in his payroll as well. Archie and Rock pretty much hated each other the rest of the movie which is common sense.
This movie just shows that a cop has to do his part and the criminal have to do there parts. There will always be good cops and bad cops. Criminals are always pretty much bad but sometimes it’s just the only thing they know. With the right help some criminals could be lead in the right path. Archie in society he was someone that sold drugs for money to get by he learned a valuable lesson about the whole cop being his best friend and he was betrayed. In this movie the criminal was portrayed as a good guy but a bad guy at the same time. He sold drugs but yet he would do anything for anybody. The cop was portrayed as a workaholic because even a bullet to his head didn’t stop him from finishing taking Archie in. This cop would be a hero in some sense because he never stopped and he got the bad guy in the end. This movie shows how even if having law enforcement may be a function it can also be a dysfunction because of people getting paid to do the wrong thing. Money makes people do the wrong things over and over and when it comes to cops it could destroy a good thing the community had going really quickly.
In conclusion in all areas of the world there is also a good to every bad and a bad to every good. You could have immaculate police officers in one area but dirty cops in another. There are functions a dysfunction to an everyday life. It’s just how bad is the bad and does the good outweigh the bad? Both movies show both things and people will judge how they want to on the good and the bad. In our criminal justice system it is innocent till proven guilty well if the person is actually innocent and proven guilty how is that true. How is that fair to anyone. It makes you wonder how many innocent people are in jail and how many guilty people got off. Crime is an ongoing thing in this world and will never stop.
