It used to be almost unattainable for children to get pornography. Comer stores would place adult magazines such as playboy on a rack behind all other magazines so that only the title would be visible and it was out of reach of children. In today’s society, pornographic magazines and videos are becoming expandable, because people with computers can easily search for porn, with millions and millions of results on the world wide web. All it would take is the click of the mouse by children and they can visit any site they want. There is no way for Internet sites to monitor who is on their site and who isn’t, if you click the button that says your over 18 they let you in no matter what, so a 11 year old can easily get on to the web site. With the click of a mouse, anyone can have access millions of sites filled with educational and entertaining information and linked with other related sites. The Internet and World Wide Web is not controlled in anyway. Sadly, issues arise creating concern for users, focusing particularly on minors. Pornography is one of the inappropriate materials on the Internet for minors; This material is harmful to young impressionable minds and I think they should find a way to control it . I think the internet is to blame, because the Internet is changing the experience of growing up in America. The internet brings the world, the good, the bad, and the ugly. As a consequence, the Internet has drastically battered the power of parents to control what their children are exposed to and at what age they are exposed to it(pornography). The fragile veil separating children from pornography today is their honest response to the choice, “If you are 18 years of age or older, press ENTER. If you are less than 18 years of age Close this Window NOW.”
Internet pornography has become a large and lucrative online industry, and one that is successfully reaching a child audience. The ease with which pornography is accessed online has made a mockery of the restrictions that society has traditionally placed on the access of minors to sexually explicit materials. There is simply no acceptable system in place today to protect children. Most of the online pornography industry operates on a weak honor system, with few or no requirements in place to keep children from viewing pornographic sites.
Online pornography is increasingly accessible to children outside the home, as well as through wireless devices that have access to the internet, leaving parents with virtually no ability to monitor their children’s activities. Children now have access to sexually explicit material and messages by wireless laptops, BlackBerries, all of which have access to the internet. Unfortunately, the exploitations of children by internet pornographers in search of a profit extend beyond just the sale of the product to children.
When I first discovered what types of pornography are being generated on the Internet, I was appalled. The common practice of today’s Internet porno entrepreneur is the posting of free teaser images on their web sites as enticements to plead for new subscribers. Any child with unrestricted Internet access can view these free pictures through just accidentally accessing such sites or by intentional searching them out. Any computer-literate child can view adult pornography, such as images that appear in Playboy, as well as pornography that is prosecutable as obscenity, which might include pictures of women having sex with animals, and the rape, torture, etc… I never realized how bad this was until I was surfing the web and about several different times while I was on looking around from site to site, windows came up within my main page with four to six different porn sites you could have access to. That was when I realized this is a growing problem in today’s society. Children should have the freedom to explore without having their minds corrupted at a young age.
Children shouldn’t be viewing this material and people still fail to see that this is a growing. I think this topic does not get much attention as it should. There are tons of materials on the World Wide Web that will give it to children under the age of 18 with just a click of the mouse. I feel that is wrong, and protection should be involved with it. Some type of restriction should be placed on these pornographic websites. I really do not have a real good idea how to ban it, but taking it off the Internet would be a good idea. Pornography over the internet is bothersome to people who think that the idea is wrong for women to be depicted by showing their bodies to any person. The main reason is that pornography is teaching the children out there that looking at nude women is good and ok, but really it is an issue that really is providing many bad things to children.
To the children out there, this is leading them in a bad direction. I know there are several kids out there that like to look at nude women. But that is not what women are for. Children should be looking up information for a school report, or looking through the sports websites, not pornographic sites. “During certain critical periods of childhood, a child’s brain is being programmed for sexual orientation. During this period, the mind appears to be developing a “hardwire” for what the person will be aroused by or attracted to. Exposure to healthy sexual norms and attitudes during this period can result in the child developing a healthy sexual orientation” (Johnsrude). What this means is, if there is exposure to pornography during this time period, sexual deviance may become indicated on the child’s “hard drive” and become a permanent part of his or her sexual orientation.
“Psychologist Dr. Victor Cline’s findings suggest that memories of experiences that occurred at times of emotional arousal (which could include sexual arousal) are imprinted on the brain by epinephrine, an adrenal gland hormone, and are difficult to erase. This may partly explain pornography’s addicting effect”(Cohen). Viewing pornographic material can possibly condition some viewers to have frequent sexual fantasie. Later they may be tempted to act out the fantasies as sexual advances.
According to Cohen, Sexual identity develops through childhood and adolescence. In fact, children generally do not have a natural sexual capacity until between the ages of ten and twelve. As they grow up, children are especially vulnerable to influences affecting their development. But pornography short-circuits and or distorts the normal personality development process and supplies misinformation about a child’s sexuality, sense of self, and body that leaves the child confused, changed, and damaged. Pornography often introduces children prematurely to sexual sensations that they are developmentally unprepared to contend with. This awareness of sexual sensation can be confusing and over stimulating for children.
The sexual excitement and eventual release obtained through pornography are mood altering. For example, if a young boy’s early stimulus was pornographic photographs, he can be conditioned to become aroused through photographs. Once this pairing is rewarded a number of times, it is likely to become permanent. The result is that it becomes difficult for the individual to experience sexual satisfaction apart from pornographic images.
With the bigger issue at hand, men and women even have sex shows on the Internet now. That really is providing bad scenes for children to have to look at. People having sex on the Internet really in my concern should be banned. Children have no right to see these obscene activities. The performers are just trying to either make money, or show themselves to others to show that sex is fun. They are providing entertainment to the viewers; but nonetheless it is wrong, I think a law should ban it.
These performers brings to mind passion in all audiences, the bigger issue concerns the ease of access for children; the responsibility of parents, and the duties of the media. “As a global communication medium, not one governing body can censor the Internet according to everyone’s standards because of the First Amendment”(Deangelis). The cyber porn issue affects everyone. Even though this issue may be discomforting, cyber pornography can also be engaging.
Maybe some part or computer chip could be provided for the blockage of pornography in the future. Parents should find a way to get this dirty scenery blocked out for their kids use. Then they would not have to worry about their kids learning of this gesture before they are even an adult. “The First Amendment protects American’s right to choose to access cyber porn locations or not. The First Amendment guarantees Americans the right to access cyber porn and respond to it in the privacy of their home”(Minow 200). Maybe organizations that makeup computers could put some sort of chip like the block out piece for the TV; pornography could possibly be put into the computer in the possible future.
Maybe they won’t implement chips into computers to stop this madness but something must be done because pornography represents a danger to the mind’s of young children because of the scarring effects of the graphic material. “Pornographic images on the Internet destroy not only a child’s innocence, but also their view of the world”(Deangelis).
