Gas Chromatography

Intro Sample...

Only one peak should be showing because ether has a lower boiling temperature, therefore, it should be the only compound extracted initially. The second sample, fraction six, should contain 2 peaks: 50:50 ether and 1,2-dimethoxyethane. It should contain 2 peaks because this is halfway through the extraction process, therefore, both compounds should still be present in equal amounts or slightly less ether. The last sample, fraction ten, should be pure 1,2-dimethoxyethane. By this point, the temperature is pretty high where ether is already gone leaving only the higher boiling temperature compound.

The Gas Chromatography allows us to see the purity of each sample. It known from this experiment that the copper wire is the most effective packing material to use in separating the 2 compounds. Glass beads comes very close to being just as effective as the copper wire. View More »
