Guys Vs. Men

Men
Dave Barry’s insight in Guys vs. Men begins to explore the world of the male figure. Barry touches base on a few things that he believes separates guys and men apart. Barry first mentions that “Guys Like Neat Stuff” and begins to explain that guys enjoy things that are unnecessary to have and perhaps a bit over the top but they are things that make them happy and keep them entertained. Barry then moves into talking about how “Guys Like A Really Pointless Challenge”. Barry mentions that guys often engage in activities that are beyond what should be the standard rational of middle aged men. His thoughts on how “Guys Do Not Have A Well-Defined Moral Code” briefly delves into how guys know that they are expected to perform and act a certain way, yet they often completely disregard these ideas held by others on how they should act, not on purpose but just because they are in fact guys. The last thing Barry brings up is that “Guys Are Not Great At Communicating Their Intimate Feelings, Assuming They Have Any”. Barry presents the idea that guys tend to keep personal issues, just that, personal. Guys generally keep answers to questions they don’t want to answer brief at best, and the only time they share how they feel is most often when in the company of another guy friend. Dave Barry’s Guys vs. Men is a funny, interesting and seemingly true effort at explaining who guys really are, and why they are that way. View More »

It is just another Sunday night and I have all my equipment packed for practice. I text one of the officers of the Club Gymnastics team asking for a ride to practice because officers provide car-pools for those unable to go to practice without a ride. We head over to the gym in Sycamore, cleverly called Energym Gymnastics, a gym that doubles as a club gymnastics team as well as provides tumbling classes. Car-pool after car-pool, it is seven at night, and more and more people trickle in, putting away their gym bags, backpacks, and extra clothes into the provided cubbies at the entrance of the g

Memoir - Playing Music In A Band

There’s no place like home. By Kha Lehuu I remember thinking when I was younger and in the crowd that I one day would be able to use the stage as my own world for half an hour. That I would just close my eyes and let my fingers and voice tell two to five minute short stories to fill up that half hour time slot. Up there I would have a sense of comfort, a sense of serenity. When I was growing up I always heard music playing throughout the house. Whether it would be a traditional Vietnamese song or Michael Jackson, I would always get really into it. My father loved music and he loved his

There has been a change of behavior in the men of present time with respect to our parents’ generation. Some changes have made men succeed more than their parents but some have made them careless of what goes around in the world surrounding them. Men have become more self-obsessed and disrespectful of their parents. On the other hand, the determination to achieve remains the same for all men. The behavior of pr

Have you ever seen a commercial with an attractive person in it and thought to yourself, “I wish I could look like that?” Well, so have other Americans and that is what are wrong with today’s society. People feel that they need to look like a superstar to be happy. One thing that influence this thought process are popular magazines showing how people can lose weight and saying that if you’re not in perfect shape then you’re not attractive. “One body-image study found that 45 percent of men were dissatisfied with their physiques; women were only slightly less satisfied at 55 percent.”(Potter).

Once upon a time, there was a prostitute called Maria. Wait a minute. 'Once upon a time' is how all the best children's stories begin and 'prostitute' is a word for adults. How can I start a book with this apparent contradiction? But since, at every moment of our lives, we all have one foot in a fairy tale and the other in the abyss, let's keep that beginning. Once upon a time, there was a prostitute called Maria. Like all prostitutes, she was born both innocent and a virgin, and, as an adolescent, she dreamed of meeting the man of her life (rich, handsome, intelligent), of getting married (

A flag football game was held out at the Northern Illinois University Outdoor Recreation Sports Complex on September 20, 2017. It was nothing large scale considering there was hardly an audience and it was a quiet night, no music playing, but there were four teams participating. There were official referees, but no coaches, just four teams of guys all wearing different colors, depending on their team. There were not even any scoreboards, just the referees to keep track. The group playing on the field closest to the benches were wearing gray or black. The gray team, for the most part, seemed li
