Physical therapy is a career that has a wide variety of specializations that can range from acute care, education, geriatrics, neurology, research, and women’s health. I specifically want to work in the area of sports physical therapy, which deals with athletic injuries, acute care, rehabilitation, and prevention.

I am pursuing a degree in physical therapy because I have been interested in the profession for a long time now. My interest stems from my experiences with gymnastics when I was a child. I was in gymnastics my whole life until one day I had to quit due to financial reasons. I had such a huge longing to go back to the sport, but I did not know how, aside from becoming a coach. Communication not only conveys information, but also the emotion attached to it. In physical therapy, communication is required in order to relay information from the administration to the physical therapist to the client.

Of course, professionalism is not only used in the physical therapy workforce, but also in the classroom, where professionalism is fostered and developed. The way I demonstrate professional behavior in the classroom is by staying attentive in class, asking questions, and being appropriately dressed. I try to show my genuine interest in class by doing these things because it shows that I actually care about what is being taught to me and that I am treating it seriously. For example, I have prepared training workshops for mentors with topics such as professionalism, resume editing, “bettering your mentoring,” and mindful listening.

Through all these experiences and skills that I have acquired throughout my lifetime, I have only grown a stronger desire to pursue a degree in physical therapy. Physical therapy has made a huge impact in my life and is such an important part of me. I cannot imagine myself in any other profession, which is why I really want to become a physical therapist through the Northern Illinois University’s doctoral program.
