The ketones also develop a partial positive charge at the carbonyl carbon, thus helping them to be more effective heterodienophiles (Figure 1). For the first time, it was proven experimentally that a simple ketone could be a starting material for a hetero-Diels-Alder reaction. Huang and Rawal studied hetero-Diels-Alder reactions between various simple ketones and 1-amino-3-siloxybuadiene in polar protic and polar aprotic solvents. After the completion of the hetero-Diels-Alder reaction and successive elimination of the amino group with acetyl chloride, they concluded that the product yield was the highest when a polar protic solvent containing a non-shielded alcohol group was utilized. 2-butanol was found to be the most efficient solvent for this reaction (1).
Figure 1. A simple ketone hydrogen bonded to the polar protic solvent. The carbonyl carbon develops a partial positive charge, thus helping it to be a more effective heterodienophile. The resulting hetero-Diels-Alder reaction is shown which is more effective than a ketone that does not participate in hydrogen bonding.

Several mechanisms could be proposed for this reaction, and two are shown. The first is that of the concerted hetero-Diels-Alder reaction. The concerted mechanism involves the diene and the heterodienophile reacting together in one step to form a product. The amino group on the cyclic product is then protonated by the acetyl chloride. The acetyl chloride then removes the TBS group, thus causing the carbonyl to form and the electrons in the double bond to move to the next carbons, thus pushing out the amine as a leaving group (Figure 2).

Figure 2. The concerted hetero-Diels-Alder mechanism.

A second possible mechanism would be a step-wise hetero-Diels-Alder mechanism. The diene first attacks the carbonyl carbon, forming a carbocation intermediate. The oxyge View More »

The last major writing project I did was an art appreciation paper as my final exam for my senior year of AP Literature and Composition in high school. Just as the project is called, the purpose of the paper is to appreciate an art form that most people typically would not appreciate. My art form was calligraphy with a focus on Eastern calligraphy. The goal of the paper was to convince the rest of the class to appreciate the art form through our paper and presentation. Most of my beginning rough drafts were made with pencil and paper but eventually transferred to my laptop as a more solid vers

Just about everyone knows our environment is in danger. One of the most serious threats is the massive amount of waste we put into the air, water, and ground every year. All across the world are thousands of places that have been, and continue to be, polluted by toxic waste, radioactive waste and just plain garbage. It is imperative that we are aware of all the things that we can do to help our environment by diminishing the amount of trash and garbage that we produce each year. One easy way of doing that is by a method called recycling. Many might not know the importance of recycling and what

Mechanical pulping There are two major mechanical pulps, thermo mechanical pulp (TMP) and groundwood pulp (GW). In the TMP process, wood is chipped and then fed into large steam-heated refiners where the chips are squeezed and fibreized between two steel discs. In the groundwood process, debarked logs are fed into grinders where they are pressed against rotating stones and fibreized. Mechanical pulping does not remove the lignin, so the yield is very high, >95%, but also causes paper made from this pulp to yellow and become brittle over time. Mechanical pulps have rather short fibre lengths a

The research paper, the three words almost every college student absolutely hates hearing. When those words are in that exact order it scares people and drives chills down their spines. The reason why the research paper has earned the ‘cringe worthy’ award is probably because it is a daunting task to perform. When people hear research paper they picture what that looks like in their heads. Typically, people imagine that they must pick a thesis that could be backed up by five or six different credible sources. Which is a correct way to write a paper, but it is not the only way to write a paper.
